Title: Great-Uncle Morrie's Cookbook
World: other
Word count: 2,364
Rating: G
Prompt: [community profile] origfic_bingo, kitchen disaster; [community profile] tic_tac_woe, Wishes go awry/spells rebound
Notes: As soon as I started putting my two bingo cards together, I knew I had to combine these two prompts!

It all started when Joy decided to experiment with making her soup spicier.

The problem was that her son hated spicy food. Joy, her husband, and their daughter would all happily eat food that seared their mouths, but Alexander would throw the soup bowl across the room if his food were spicy enough to please his father—and he was much too old to be throwing food. Punishment hadn’t helped.

So Joy had resorted to making her food relatively bland, enough that everyone was willing to eat it, even if they weren’t always thrilled.

But she was tired of it, and she craved the fire. So she’d looked into ways to make her son’s share of the food palatable to him while the rest of the family ate spices that melded with the rest of their dish, and that had led her to the attic.

So maybe it really all started when she found Great-Uncle Morrie’s cookbook.Read more... )

Prompt: [community profile] origfic_bingo, swimming; [community profile] tic_tac_woe, megatsunami/tidal wave
Notes: So I guess I like apocalypses.

Alisa dived.

For the split second above the water, she could hear her little brothers cheering from their raft, but as soon as she hit the surface, all sounds faded away. The boys were still young enough to think it was all a game; Alisa was desperately envious of them, and fiercely determined to keep them that innocent for as long as possible.Read more... )

Rating: PG (for brief mention of past violence)
Prompt: [community profile] rainbowfic Fire Opal 3, Impassioned; Hills of Iowa 9, Here's hoping that the days ahead won't be as bitter as the ones behind you.
Notes: I was also inspired by the Thimbleful Thursday prompt "vale of tears," but I think I went too far beyond the wordcount for it to qualify!

Mo dragged herself towards home. She was exhausted after another long day of job searching. But she wasn’t discouraged; two people had said they’d contact her if they had any openings, after she’d declared herself totally willing to do any kind of manual labor. She’d emphasized that there was absolutely nothing too disgusting for her to take on, without actually telling them how she knew that.Read more... )

Word count: 385 (exactly!)
Rating: G
Prompt: Thimbleful Thursday's Tell-Me Tuesday: Who won the war?
Notes: It's been a very long time since I wrote anything in this world, but the prompt immediately brought it to mind!

"But Mama, who won the war?" Jobek asked. His brother held his hand and nodded.

Abida stroked the dark heads of her little sons. They looked so like their father, except for Zalek’s eyes--green, like hers. "We did, of course, my darlings. Do you not see the beautiful home we live in, all the servants who answer to us, the great lands that your father owns?"Read more... )

Word count: 616--I overshot a little bit!
Rating: PG-13 for drug use
Prompt: Thimbleful Thursday: quote unquote
Notes: Maggie is really a fun character to write.

There were three of them lying on the hood of the car, staring up at the stars--at least, the few stars they could see, between the trees and the light pollution.

But this was good. As good as it got. Melissa passed the joint to Maggie; she sucked in, held it in her lungs for a moment, and passed it on to Aric. The smoke didn't seem to do much for her, but she enjoyed the companionship.Read more... )

Prompt: [community profile] crowdfunding Creative Jam, "It is difficult to be the first of your kind."
Notes: This prompt immediately brought to mind the first female knights in Uthyr's court. This story immediately follows Recruitment Day.

The other hirelings edged away when they saw Electra and Brandigen walking into the hall.

Electra had seen those looks before. Half of them were just trying to be polite, because there were ladies entering the room—even if those men were baffled by the militaristic clothing the ladies wore. The other half knew Electra and Brandigen for what they were, women knights, and did not want to touch them for fear their disobedience to the laws of the sexes should rub off and make them weak.Read more... )

Notes: This story follows one I have written but not posted, in which Morwenna has taken over Camelot while Ursula is away fighting the saxons and seduced Gwynn. At the end of that story, Ursula and the knights return; Ursula and Morwenna are both pregnant. This begins a few months later.

"Don't do this, Morwenna," Gwynn hissed, grabbing her arm. She snatched her arm away from him, almost overbalancing, gravid with their child.

"Why shouldn't I?" she growled back. "And how dare you try to stop me."Read more... )

Notes: A little background on why these people ended up imprisoned on this planet.

People had already been imprisoned for saying things like this. Natasha knew that. No one had, yet, been imprisoned for listening. But she was being careful anyway.

Maybe she could have been more careful. But it was a big campus. She’d set up a couple of reroutes, so no one should be able to trace her specifically. And she seriously doubted that she was the only one on campus watching this speech; anyone hunting for dissidents on campus would have a hard time finding her specifically.

Besides. She had to listen.Read more... )

Laura knew she shouldn’t have let herself be alone.

She’d gotten so confident since meeting her sisters, though. She’d never been this confident before moving here—always in Amy’s shadow. Not that she’d ever thought about it in those terms. Redhe pedaled her bicycle as fast as she could, heedless of the slick the ground was turning into under the deluge. She was too happy, too bursting with energy, to slow down.

The rain poured from the sky and plastered her hair to her face and her clothes to her body, probably ruining the pretty dress she’d worn to town. It chilled her, making the hairs stand up on her arms and her toes pinch. It fell into her eyes and made it hard to see.Read more... )

Word count: 100 exactly!
Rating: G

Cesar crouched under the table. Next to him, Brian also huddled, his shoulder, arm, and leg pressed up against Cesar’s.

Cesar had his eyes squeezed shut and his hands over his ears. He didn’t know whether Brian was doing the same. He couldn’t see or hear him.

Even now all he saw was fire. All he heard was fire. His eyelids could not protect him from the searing brightness that surrounded them. His hands over his ears could not keep out the monstrous, hungry roar.

But somehow, the table was untouched. Somehow, their space underneath was safe.

Brian kept singing.

Title: On the Internet
World: robot rights
Word count: 217
Rating: PG-13 for implied horrible things
Prompt: Thimbleful Thursday, icing on the cake; [community profile] rainbowfic Antique Brass 6, The Internet has everything.
Notes: This follows The Best Boutiques (locked) and comes before She Has Her Reasons.

“Hey,” said Lola, “your friend is on the Internet.”

“What?” Dylan leaned over the back of the couch to see what she was looking at. “What friend?”

“What friend do you think?” Lola pointed at her smart watch, then zoomed with her fingers so its hologram mode took effect and the screen appeared, large as life, in the air in front of them.

There, along with a few other photos of people he didn’t recognize, was Mo. The photo was a few years old, and clearly taken before whatever trauma she’d just escaped from—but there was yet more hollowness in her eyes, more pain in the twist of her lips, than when he’d last seen her in person, when they were students.

He scanned the text quickly. It described a major company’s neglect, the horror of many people being trapped in a small room for months, the anger when it was finally revealed that they were being kept there, the relief when they were released. Mo was one of them, but she was considered missing.

A lump thickened his throat as he tried to speak. “Don’t tell her we found this, all right?” He checked out the window to make sure Mo and Brooke weren’t back yet. “That would just be the icing on the cake.”

“Hey. Angel.”

Angel turned, surprised. That wasn’t Charlotte’s voice or Laura’s or Ivy’s; no one else ever spoke to her. Except Maureen. But this wasn’t Maureen.
