Title: The Most Beautiful Fountain in Affamarg
Word count: 346 (total: 925)
Rating: G
Prompt: [personal profile] wyld_dandelyon's: The most beautiful fountain in Affamarg
Notes: This is set in Torn World! Hopefully I didn't miss anything I should have read before writing this because I have not nearly read all the articles yet XD

Note that this is not canon until/unless approved by the canon board.

There are two parks in the city of Affamarg. (Actually, Affamarg, as a well-designed and beautiful city, has a great number of parks, but only two parks come into the story.) They happen to be across the street from each other, one on the north side and one on the south side. They are very different parks; the park on the south side has many sharp angles, made of metal and stone, arranged into beautiful geometric patterns, while the park on the north side is full of bushes and flowers, flowing over and through each other, in lumps and bumps and messy parts. Both are extremely beautiful in their own way. Both also contain fountains.Read more... )

Title: Cold Date
Word count: 1,208
Rating: PG-13
Prompt: [personal profile] aldersprig's: Creepy: as per Lion, Witch, Wardrobe, being turned into a statue
Notes: Apparently the secondary theme of this Garden of Prose is "meeting faerie lovers at Chatoyant College in the winter with disastrous consequences," though I suppose if I hadn't already established that Vertiline meets Marlin in the winter I would have done this one differently. This felt a bit like cheating because I have already established the presence of people turned into statues at Chatoyant College, but I hadn't written this part of the story before!

This is a direct sequel to Fire, Earth, and Water, a bonus story that shows more of the magical system used at Chatoyant College.

Vertiline swung on her cloak and walked out into the cold air. She shivered instantly, despite the warmth of her fur-lined cloak. It must have been too cold for snow—the sky was full of glittering stars, and other than that, it was deeply dark. The moon was either dark or not up. She wished she’d borrowed a candle from Professor Lal to light her way, but before she could change her mind and go back in, her date appeared.Read more... )

Word count: 687 (incomplete total: 2,919)
Rating: G (possibly higher eventually...)
Prompt: [personal profile] anke's: Why was a statue deliberately walled in an alcove or room in an old cellar?
Notes: Partly inspired by [personal profile] aldersprig's fixer-upper fun ;)

It was their dream house.

Or at least it would be, when they were done with it.Read more... )

Title: Lady Margareta's Faucet
Word count: 410
Rating: G
Prompt: [personal profile] pippin's: when the fortune teller's pump stops
Notes: I have no idea whether Lady Margareta is a real fortune teller or not.

“Come one, come all!” cried the woman in the hundreds of multi-colored scarves. They even covered part of her face. Ryan couldn’t even tell how old she was. “Lady Margareta can see all, will tell all, so you will know all!”

Ryan turned to Jose and grinned. “Should I?”

Jose laughed and slapped him on the shoulder, pushing him forward. “Absolutely, dude. Go for it.”Read more... )

Title: The Faerie Fountain
Word count: 1,777
Rating: PG
Prompt: [personal profile] ysabetwordsmith's: on the night the full moon, the fairy fountain runs not with water but silver wine made of moonlight.
Notes: This is set in Chatoyant College, a couple of years before Corrie, Edie, and Dawn's time. The story features one new character and one character who is important in the main story, but under a different name.

Roslyn looked out the window. Then she put her coat on. Then she looked out the window. Then she played a game of Solitaire on her computer.

The third time she looked out the window, Daphne was there, standing outside in the snow. Roslyn waved happily. Daphne waved back. Roslyn tore out of the room (being careful to lock the door behind her, because there had been some thefts when girls forgot to do that) and ran down the steps as fast as she could.Read more... )

Title: Seeking Shelter
Word count: 303 (total: 3,210)
Rating: PG-13
Prompt: [personal profile] smeddley's: The storm's path
Notes: Hey, look! I wrote a Wasteland story with an actual sorceress in it! Considering how important a part magic is to my conception of this world, I haven't done much with it.

This got a lot creepier than I expected as I continued it...

The trees were whipping around them. The wind was coming faster and faster. Piri knew she had to get her family—her friends, but her family of choice—to safety. But which way? Where was safety? She wanted to climb a tree, but it wasn’t safe. The children were all crying. Her friends were trying to calm them down, but not having much luck.Read more... )

Title: The Wrong Path
Word count: 362 (total: 3,465)
Rating: G
Prompt: [personal profile] kay_brooke's: The wrong path/is it really the wrong path.
Notes: This is several months after the other prison planet stories that I've written so far, but it's a scene I've had in mind for a while, so I'm pretty excited about it!

It was a beautiful, thriving, old-growth forest. The trees—even if they weren’t any that Carla would have recognized either from the biomes at home or pictures of Earth—were tall and beautiful, and the light filtering down through them was green and gold. If they hadn’t been able to tell by the slow warming of the air over the several months they’d been on this planet, she would know for certain that now it was summer. There were birds singing in the trees, and little animals scurrying about under the bushes (some of which were certainly the same kind that the men were now preparing for their supper.) It would have been a perfect, peaceful day, except…Read more... )

Mama was sick. She said she wasn’t, but Tarnik knew better than that. Her belly and her feet were all swollen up, and she didn’t want to get out of bed. Notes: Palua has previously appeared in Gathering Herbs, though this story is set about a year before that one.

Today Palua was fourteen years old. She had been educated in the convent, along with several of her siblings and other noble boys and girls from the west of Atash, for the last six years. Now her official education came to an end, and she would return home.

Prompt: [personal profile] kayim's: Crossroads
Notes: I ended this at what felt like a natural point (er, not that you can tell) but Sirna and Ayol's story is definitely not over, so I hope I'll write a sequel to it at some point. I hope nothing horrible happens to them.

It was hot. And Sirna was exhausted, even though she’d only woken up two hours ago. They weren’t sleeping well, because there was nowhere to sleep. And she couldn’t sleep too soundly, because she had to take care of her little sister, and there was no one else to help with that. There was only them.Read more... )

Title: The Pathless
Word count: 331 (total: 1,017)
Rating: G
Prompt: [personal profile] pippin's: Roads for the pathless.
Notes: I believe it was one of [personal profile] ysabetwordsmith's poems that introduced me to the term "gynoid," which I use once only because "androids and gynoids" is a bit of a mouthful. I think this story might be the same world as another story I'm vaguely working on, but far in its past, so it might get its own world-name. Suggestions are appreciated.

This story has sequels: A Road and Built for Love.

Rating: PG-13 for language
Prompt: [personal profile] anke's: paths in the sky; also inspired by this ballet performance prompt
Notes: I have absolutely no idea where this is going, if anywhere--but I like Captain Agnes!

There was an air barge coming right at them. Captain Agnes Leach hauled hard on the controls and pulled her own airship out of the way. The barge swept past them, without even any kind of acknowledgement. “Fucking asshole!” she shouted after him, even though there was no possible way the air barge’s steersman could have heard her. Then she cursed more as she realized her crutch had slipped out from under her shoulder, she was in serious danger of losing her balance, and she wasn’t going to get her airship back into her lane in time to avoid the next oncoming ship. “Hillary!” she called desperately. “Somebody, I need an assist!”Read more... )

Rating: R for blood (not appearing in this section) and implied sex
Prompt: [personal profile] ysabetwordsmith's: The trail left by a unicorn
Notes: Look, it's Kaede again! Unfortunately, this story did not want to cooperate by being in the first person (as Bigfoot Hunting did), so I've switched pronouns instead--Kaede's gender is very flexible. I'm not sure how well it works.

Kaede’s cell phone rang in the middle of the night, waking him. That was never a good sign. Groaning, he extracted his arm from under the girl in bed with him and grabbed the phone. He fumbled it open and pressed it to his ear. “Hugh?”Read more... )

Notes: The long-awaited (at least by me) beginning to the story of the prison planet!

Carla woke up. Her head throbbed and her mouth was dry, like it had been stuffed with cotton. Was she hung over? She’d never experienced this sensation before. But that didn’t make sense, she realized as her head cleared further. She’d never had a chance to get drunk. Yesterday, she’d been in prison.Read more... )

Title: The Sheep
Word count: 852
Rating: PG
Prompt: [personal profile] lynnoconnacht's: Enclosure
Notes: It's been ages since I've written in this setting! But the idea of enclosing for private use what once was public land seemed perfect for this conquered-and-conquerors world.

Chetai walked out to the sheep pen. She tried to walk without shaking, but it was difficult. Thankfully, the sheep did just as they always did: clustered by the gate, baaing and snorting eagerly in their desire to get outside and graze. She smiled at them, not that they knew the difference. Sheep never knew the difference. And that, today, was why she loved them.Read more... )

They stepped up into a world she didn’t understand. She knew from her experience that she would never be able to understand it, and she must find something to focus on, quickly, that would anchor her mind and keep her from going mad in the chaotic press of images, sounds, and sensations. Notes: Risotto is tasty. As long as there's no cheese in it.

“Nadia? Where are you?” came Mark’s voice from the front door.

“In the kitchen,” she called back. “Come in, love, I can’t leave this.”

He came in. She heard him dropping his things on the couch and then walking through to the kitchen. He took a deep breath as he walked up behind her. “That smells amazing. What is it?”

Palua felt she had just drifted off to sleep when she felt her shoulder being touched. Her training held; she woke instantly, memory returning without a pause, and knew it was Usian, the elder priestess assigned as her mentor. She rose silently to keep from waking the fellow novices with whom she shared a room, slipped her shoes on, and pulled a coarse brown cloak on over the simple shift she wore to sleep in—deliberately identical to the clothing all priestesses wore night and day. Usian was dressed almost identically, though her cloak was more finely woven and pure white, the sign that she was a full-fledged healer.Read more... )
