Title: A Watery Grave
World: prison planet
Word count: 1,118
Rating: PG-13 for dead things
Prompt: [community profile] rainbowfic Antique Brass 12, Now, focus on something benign. Not me! I haven't been benign since 1956!; Moonlight 14, Antediluvian; [community profile] origfic_bingo, a hint; Tombstone by Suzanne Vega
Notes: I'm trying to flesh out a few of the worlds that I haven't written so much in, so here's a prison planet story! This is actually the same universe as robot rights, though it's hundreds of years in the future and thousands of lightyears away.

Carla didn’t really understand why the others were so wary of the cave. Sure, it was a weird cave. It probably hadn’t even been there when they’d built the museum—it had probably worn away in the hundreds or thousands of years since the building had been inhabited. And there were the freaky animals in it. But they were such useful freaky animals. Even if they did attack each other far more than they should have for food and whatever else it was they wanted.Read more... )

Title: Maureen
World: Moonsisters
Word count: 6,004
Rating: PG-13 for implied child abuse and possibly murder
Prompt: [community profile] rainbowfic Antique Brass 1, Okay, could you sound a little more creepy?; The Hills of Iowa 2, Oh, my enemy, beautiful enemy.; [community profile] origfic_bingo silence
Notes: This is a lot scarier than it was when I first started writing about these characters. When I was, uh, twelve. Oh, and ...Squirrel takes place during this story.

“Oh my god, your hair is just so silky, isn’t it? How do you do it?”

There were hands in Ivy’s hair. She sat up straight and still. It was a pleasant tone of voice; whoever it was seemed to be just trying to be friendly. But still, they were touching her hair. She twitched her head so it came out of the person’s hands and moved slowly so that she could see who it was. She stayed silent.

It was Maureen, the most beautiful, blonde, popular girl in the school, now standing with her hands on her hips and a teasing smile on her face. “Ivy, right? I mean, your hair is just perfect. What kind of conditioner do you use?”Read more... )

By the time they realized it hadn’t been China that had sent the first bombs, it was too late.

They’d been clever: the first nukes hit close enough to DC to send the capital into a full-scale panic, but left the politicians and the Pentagon alive and intact enough to plan retaliation.

Then there were the bombs up and down the California coast. It wasn’t clear whether they planned it or it was just serendipitous timing, but the earthquake that followed the bombs multiplied the destruction. And they left behind just enough evidence to point to China.

Refugees poured from the coasts by the millions. Then they bombed the refugees.

But even terrorists slip up eventually.Read more... )

Title: Metamorphosis
Word count: 694
Rating: G
Prompt: origfic_bingo G1: wings
Notes: Possibly overly influenced by Addergoole. I may post this as a bonus story at my site at some point.

Adora stretches the wings uncertainly. They feel wet and heavy against her back, lying there lifelessly, but as she finds the muscles that attach to them and flex, they lift away, and seem to gain energy, though they are still heavy. “Are you sure this is the way it’s supposed to be?”

Lal laughs, not unkindly. “No. But I was expecting something like this. You were a caterpillar before. Now you’re a butterfly.”Read more... )
