Title: She Would Follow
World: prison planet
Word count: 795
Rating: PG-13
Prompt: [community profile] rainbowfic Fire Opal 6, Fiery speech/sermon; The Hills of Iowa 8, I was out here listening all the time.; Antique Brass 20, Hey, Big Brother's watching. / Yes, yes, and so can Little Sister.
Notes: A little background on why these people ended up imprisoned on this planet.

People had already been imprisoned for saying things like this. Natasha knew that. No one had, yet, been imprisoned for listening. But she was being careful anyway.

Maybe she could have been more careful. But it was a big campus. She’d set up a couple of reroutes, so no one should be able to trace her specifically. And she seriously doubted that she was the only one on campus watching this speech; anyone hunting for dissidents on campus would have a hard time finding her specifically.

Besides. She had to listen.Read more... )

Title: Calling a Critter a Smeerp
World: prison planet
Word count: 547
Rating: G
Prompt: Thimbleful Thursday: beat around the bush
Notes: Ha! Just got it in under the prescribed wordcount ;) Now, when the wordcounts get smaller... not sure if I'll manage.

Carla looked dubiously at the bushes that the critter had run into, weighing her makeshift spear in her hands. “Are you sure this is how this is supposed to work?”Read more... )

Title: A Watery Grave
World: prison planet
Word count: 1,118
Rating: PG-13 for dead things
Prompt: [community profile] rainbowfic Antique Brass 12, Now, focus on something benign. Not me! I haven't been benign since 1956!; Moonlight 14, Antediluvian; [community profile] origfic_bingo, a hint; Tombstone by Suzanne Vega
Notes: I'm trying to flesh out a few of the worlds that I haven't written so much in, so here's a prison planet story! This is actually the same universe as robot rights, though it's hundreds of years in the future and thousands of lightyears away.

Carla didn’t really understand why the others were so wary of the cave. Sure, it was a weird cave. It probably hadn’t even been there when they’d built the museum—it had probably worn away in the hundreds or thousands of years since the building had been inhabited. And there were the freaky animals in it. But they were such useful freaky animals. Even if they did attack each other far more than they should have for food and whatever else it was they wanted.Read more... )

Title: The Wrong Path
Word count: 362 (total: 3,465)
Rating: G
Prompt: [personal profile] kay_brooke's: The wrong path/is it really the wrong path.
Notes: This is several months after the other prison planet stories that I've written so far, but it's a scene I've had in mind for a while, so I'm pretty excited about it!

It was a beautiful, thriving, old-growth forest. The trees—even if they weren’t any that Carla would have recognized either from the biomes at home or pictures of Earth—were tall and beautiful, and the light filtering down through them was green and gold. If they hadn’t been able to tell by the slow warming of the air over the several months they’d been on this planet, she would know for certain that now it was summer. There were birds singing in the trees, and little animals scurrying about under the bushes (some of which were certainly the same kind that the men were now preparing for their supper.) It would have been a perfect, peaceful day, except…Read more... )

Title: A New World
Word count: 307 (total: 1,004)
Rating: G
Prompt: [personal profile] kay_brooke's: Gateways separating parts of our lives.
Notes: The long-awaited (at least by me) beginning to the story of the prison planet!

Carla woke up. Her head throbbed and her mouth was dry, like it had been stuffed with cotton. Was she hung over? She’d never experienced this sensation before. But that didn’t make sense, she realized as her head cleared further. She’d never had a chance to get drunk. Yesterday, she’d been in prison.Read more... )

Hi and welcome to my Dreamwidth journal! The main thing I post here is original fiction.

My work is posted with varying degrees of privacy. If nothing is listed after the summary, it is a public piece. If it says "locked," then you must be on my access list to read it (usually this is because I want to keep rights of first publication intact). If it says "sponsor this," then the beginning of the story is public, with the rest of it waiting to be unlocked for a donation!

Title: The Cave
Word count: 808
Rating: PG
Prompt: 3ww 1/19/11: descent, kill, surreal
Notes: I was going to have her find a weird skeleton, but then I forgot and I'd already wrapped up the story so I didn't want to rewrite it, so maybe that'll be a separate story. I don't have a name for this world yet. I might just call it "prison planet."

They were starting to get used to the cave. Or at least Carla was. It was a strange and surreal thing to have at the back of what appeared to be a museum, but they were lucky it was there—it was their only source of fresh water, and the fish and gulls, while not easy to catch, were their best source of food.Read more... )
