Prosy: East

Title: East
Word count: 305 (total: 705)
Rating: G
Prompt: [personal profile] kayim's: Crossroads
Notes: I ended this at what felt like a natural point (er, not that you can tell) but Sirna and Ayol's story is definitely not over, so I hope I'll write a sequel to it at some point. I hope nothing horrible happens to them.

It was hot. And Sirna was exhausted, even though she’d only woken up two hours ago. They weren’t sleeping well, because there was nowhere to sleep. And she couldn’t sleep too soundly, because she had to take care of her little sister, and there was no one else to help with that. There was only them.

But still they followed the road east, though every building they passed was empty and abandoned, and the heat rose in shimmering waves over the road, and the sun shone in their eyes. Because there was nothing left where they had come from, and their parents had told them that there would be people in the east.

They walked on the side of the road, because Sirna had worn through her shoes days ago, and it hurt to walk on the tar. She didn’t think the grass was entirely safe, either, but so far all she’d gotten were a few mosquito and fly bites. She held Ayol’s hand, even though both of their palms were slick with sweat, because they couldn’t be separated, not for a minute.

Sirna didn’t know if it was a good sign or a bad sign that they hadn’t seen anybody else. Maybe everybody was already in the cities where people lived. At least no one had tried to bother them. Their father had told her that people might try to bother them, and there was a gun in her backpack, but she didn’t know how to use it, and she didn’t want to. Especially not in front of Ayol.

Her eyes were half-closed, and she was practically falling asleep on her feet, when there was a sudden, gentle tug on her arm. Ayol had stopped walking. Instantly, Sirna snapped to alertness. “What is it?”

Ayol just pointed. Ahead of them, the road split.
