Prosy: Magic Dough
Title: Magic Dough
Word count: 420
Rating: G
Prompt:
sweet_sparrow's: Herb dragons! (i.e. little live dragons made of herbs. Ideally, anyway.)
Notes: I'm pretty sure that real herbs would make terrible dough and not stick together, but these are obviously magic herbs.
“But we want to go with you!” Lara complained, running after her mother. The “we” referred, of course, to her and her best friend Sherri, and not to her big brother Kevin, who had been assigned to watch her and Sherri. She knew from experience that Kevin would refuse to play with them.
“Sorry, sweetie,” said her mother, lifting her up and seating her on the kitchen table. “You wouldn’t really like it, I promise. It would be very boring.”
“But there are horses!” Lara cried.
Her mother crossed her arms and turned to stare at her father. “What did you tell her?”
Her dad grinned and poked Lara’s nose. “There aren’t any real horses, sweetie. Just imaginary ones. I have to think of something so I’m not bored, too.”
“Kevin, you better make sure they don’t break anything!” Lara’s mother yelled. Then they left.
Lara jumped down from the table and turned to Sherri. “What should we do?”
Sherri shrugged. “Annoy Kevin?”
Lara giggled. “We can try…”
They went to his bedroom door, which was locked. “Kevin, come out and play!” Lara called.
“We want piggy back rides!” Sherri tried.
“Go away!” came Kevin’s voice. “Go play in the kitchen!”
Well, it was as good an idea as any. Lara looked at Sherri and shrugged. They went back downstairs to the kitchen and started looking around for toys. Lara opened the cabinet where the pots and pans were, but they weren’t as fun as they used to be, and the big cauldron was hung up where she couldn’t reach it. Sherri wanted to make play-dough, but they couldn’t reach the flour, either. They tried asking Kevin but he still wouldn’t come out. Then Sherri found the spice rack.
“We can make dough with this,” she said. Lara filled a bowl with water and they sat on the floor. They dipped their fingers in the water and then in the spices. The green ones stuck together best. Soon they had a makeshift dough. Lara tried to make hers into a snowman but it wouldn’t stand up. Sherri gave hers legs and held it up. “It’s a horse! See, we have better horses here.”
Lara didn’t think it looked much like a horse, so she took some different-colored green stuff and made some wings. “Now it’s a dragon,” she announced. They prodded the wings until they stayed stuck on.
Neither of them were prepared for it to raise its head, flap its wings, and fly up above their heads.

Aww...
Interestingly, herbs can make dough. The best versions I know are both made with fresh herbs. Rosary beads used to be made always from mashed rose petals, shaped into beads and allowed to dry. The thick kind of basil pesto is essentially basil leaves mashed to paste with enough oil and pine nuts to stick them together into kind of a dough.
Now, some herbs have gluey qualities, like comfrey. I suppose it's not impossible for something like that to reconstitute into a sticky consistency if dried and then mixed with water.
Re: Aww...
Hmm, I knew about rose petal beads, but I didn't know you could make dough with other herbs. Neat!
