Welcome to Clare-Dragonfly's one card Tarot draw!

I've been studying the Tarot on and off for, oh, the last fourteen years. Now I'm back to it, I remember how much I love it, and I want more practice. In particular, I want more practice reading for people besides myself!

To receive a card, all you need to do is leave a comment. Or, if you'd prefer more privacy, you can PM me via Dreamwidth or email me at gwraig [dot] annwn at gmail. If you include a specific question, the card will likely be easier to interpret, but it's not necessary.

When I respond with your card and my interpretation, I would really appreciate any feedback you have, so that I can improve my reading!

You can choose among these three decks, the ones I am most comfortable with:
- The Hanson-Roberts Tarot (a traditional Rider-Waite-style deck with soft colored pencil illustrations)
- The Shadowscapes Tarot (less traditional but still following the same style, this deck has fantasy-inspired watercolor illustrations; it does not use reversals)
- The Incidental Tarot (the least traditional of my decks; it uses different suits, and all of the court cards as well as many of the Major Arcana have different names)

If you can't or don't want to decide, I am happy to pick a deck for you.

Even though I'm doing this mainly for practice and not to make money, I will accept donations! If you donate $5 or more, I will draw two more cards to clarify your reading. If you want to donate more or would like a larger reading, contact me privately using either of the methods mentioned above and we can work something out.

Also, I have a special link incentive! But beware--the Fantod likes to predict truly horrible things!

Your first card is the Six of Wands. This is a card of confidence and triumph. Whatever you're thinking about doing, go for it! It might be hard work, but it will bring you success.

Your clarifying cards are the Eight of Swords and Strength. The Eight of Swords refers to struggle--the swan it depicts is trapped between swords and brambles. However, there is a hummingbird hovering just above, there to help the swan. This card tells you not to give up the struggle, because there is hope and help. Strength is a card of power, but not violent power--the woman holds the beast's jaw in her hand, but she is soothing it, not forcing it down. This card urges patience and persistence, and promises success.

Your card is The Rose King, reversed. This may refer to an actual person, in which case you should be wary of a man who seems inconsistent, extravagant, or dishonest--because he probably is. Or it may be advising you to be more like the reversed Rose King, in which case you should not feel guilty about being selfish or flaky--you need that time of your own--and perhaps perfect honesty is not always the best policy. In fact, the latter may be a good way to deal with the man...

Sure! I will use the Incidental Tarot, as it's the one I have in front of me now.

Your card is the Three of Quills, reversed. The quills are the element of air and usually refer to the intellectual life. The reversed three is a warning--there may be interpersonal challenges ahead for you. The advice may be to buckle down and focus on intellectual work (I see in your profile that you are a writer), or at least to pull in and focus on yourself, as the three quills depicted on the card point together to the bottom of a heart.

Oh, cool! I bet if you just play with it you'll come up with all kinds of stuff. I also have a book called Tarot for Writers, though I haven't read it yet.

Your card is the Seven of Wands. This card depicts a fox defending her kits against a badger. It tells you to fight if it becomes necessary! But hopefully it won't be: the fox and badger are surrounded by bamboo, quick-growing and flexible. It will outlast the fight. Take a stand for what you believe in, but be flexible--you don't want to fight so hard you break.

Your card is The Hermit. This shows a man carrying a lantern alone atop a high cliff of rock. He is alone to seek his wisdom, but he may not be alone for long. This card encourages you to continue in the next step of your education--you are meant to find your wisdom! And when you do, you may find yourself in a teaching position, passing on what you have found to others who are not as far along their journeys as you are. Even if you don't seek this out, others may see you in a teaching or mentoring position anyway.

Your card is the Nine of Quills, reversed. (I would have been quite surprised if a quill had not come up!) These quills are dripping and writing with red ink--or blood. But the reversal turns aside the fear and pain of the upright card. The message is simple: this too shall pass. If you've been dealing with writer's block, don't let it worry you. The problem isn't you, but some temporary circumstance.

He is the ruler of all things; all order comes from him. His is power and control. But it is important to note that he is still part of, and constrained by, the natural world--in fact, it is the natural world, as embodied by the dragon, that gives him his power. Exert your strengths to bring order to your world, but don't lose track of your roots in the process.

This shows a door with a huge keyhole, decorated with oak leaves and an acorn in almost the style of a coat of arms. The tens indicate completion and the oaks are connected to money, so this card seems to be telling you that this job is the culmination of your efforts. You may need to reach further than you have before, but this is what you have been reaching for.

Your card is the King of Pentacles. This card shows a man with a tree growing all around him, and he's quite contented about it. A dragon protects him and the tree. I have to say that this doesn't look like a very good card for moving! But maybe it shows what life will be like after the move: grounded, content, and safe. The king is also generous, offering the fruits of his tree to anyone--the dragon is there to protect the tree, not to chase people off. Court cards can represent real people, so perhaps you will find a generous friend who will help finance the move or your living situation.

(How interesting, I was just thinking that I'd drawn so few cups for this.) The ace is all the potential of the suit of cups: emotions, movement, magic, reflections. It advises you to try new things and make new beginnings--after all, the fish didn't know they could fly until now! But flying is also a reflection of swimming, so the potential was always there. What in your life could be made even better if you flipped it around?

I chose the Hanson-Roberts deck for you. And I didn't even finish shuffling: the Eight of Swords popped right out. (I don't know if I've ever had a card throw itself up and out of the deck before!) This card depicts a woman bound, blindfolded, and surrounded by swords. She appears to be standing in the shallows of the ocean. This is a difficult card, indicating that you are--or feel--trapped. She could make her way out of the circle of swords, but she cannot see which is the right way to go. But perhaps she has chosen this herself. You may benefit from a blindfold to keep you from being distracted by too many options, or restraints to force yourself to think creatively. The water implies both creativity and a connection to all things. She may feel alone, but she is not. She is not gagged, and could ask for help, should she decide she needs it.
