For Tonight is Hallowe'en

It was Hallowe’en night, at last.

Lucy lay awake in bed, still and silent, pretending to sleep until she could hear the light snores of her roommate. Then she got up very quietly. She’d had to wait until Clementine was asleep to sneak out, because there was no way she would possibly understand, and she would probably report Lucy to the dorm mother.

Lucy was rather more daring and modern than her stuffy roommate, so she put on her shoes quietly, and then carefully opened the window and leaned out.

She would have no trouble getting out this way. There were no bushes by the window, and since they were on the ground floor, she would hardly even have to jump. The window was small, though, so she took her hat and tossed it a ways off into the grass, where she would not risk crushing it.

She pushed herself through, using her arms as leverage. She was still fully dressed, and she had some trouble bending her knees in her long skirt, tight down to her calves. She tumbled awkwardly onto the grass, but she made it out at last, hastily shut the window behind her, and stood out in the field, breathing the cool air and staring up at the bright moon.

She lifted her hat from the ground and pinned it back to her head, making sure it was at an attractive angle. He would be here soon. She looked around, smiling, waiting for him to meet her. He was taking her to a party, but he’d been very mysterious about where and what it was.

She could hardly wait.

January Patreon story is up

Charlie was sitting on his couch, staring at the TV even though it was off, head aching from the full moon festivities from the night before, when there was a knock at his door. He turned his head fuzzily, then made himself get up and go answer it. That was his job. He’d signed up for this. If someone needed his help, he was going to be there to give it to them.

To his relief, the knock was his neighbor and fellow RA—so he probably didn’t have to help her with anything. “Lorelei. Hi. Want a cup of coffee? Or, uh, tea? I was just about to make… something. Something with caffeine.”

Prosy: Cold Date

Title: Cold Date
Word count: 1,208
Rating: PG-13
Prompt: [personal profile] aldersprig's: Creepy: as per Lion, Witch, Wardrobe, being turned into a statue
Notes: Apparently the secondary theme of this Garden of Prose is "meeting faerie lovers at Chatoyant College in the winter with disastrous consequences," though I suppose if I hadn't already established that Vertiline meets Marlin in the winter I would have done this one differently. This felt a bit like cheating because I have already established the presence of people turned into statues at Chatoyant College, but I hadn't written this part of the story before!

This is a direct sequel to Fire, Earth, and Water, a bonus story that shows more of the magical system used at Chatoyant College.

Vertiline swung on her cloak and walked out into the cold air. She shivered instantly, despite the warmth of her fur-lined cloak. It must have been too cold for snow—the sky was full of glittering stars, and other than that, it was deeply dark. The moon was either dark or not up. She wished she’d borrowed a candle from Professor Lal to light her way, but before she could change her mind and go back in, her date appeared.Read more... )

Prosy: The Faerie Fountain

Title: The Faerie Fountain
Word count: 1,777
Rating: PG
Prompt: [personal profile] ysabetwordsmith's: on the night the full moon, the fairy fountain runs not with water but silver wine made of moonlight.
Notes: This is set in Chatoyant College, a couple of years before Corrie, Edie, and Dawn's time. The story features one new character and one character who is important in the main story, but under a different name.

Roslyn looked out the window. Then she put her coat on. Then she looked out the window. Then she played a game of Solitaire on her computer.

The third time she looked out the window, Daphne was there, standing outside in the snow. Roslyn waved happily. Daphne waved back. Roslyn tore out of the room (being careful to lock the door behind her, because there had been some thefts when girls forgot to do that) and ran down the steps as fast as she could.Read more... )

Hi and welcome to my Dreamwidth journal! The main thing I post here is original fiction.

My work is posted with varying degrees of privacy. If nothing is listed after the summary, it is a public piece. If it says "locked," then you must be on my access list to read it (usually this is because I want to keep rights of first publication intact). If it says "sponsor this," then the beginning of the story is public, with the rest of it waiting to be unlocked for a donation!

Metamorphosis

Title: Metamorphosis
Word count: 694
Rating: G
Prompt: origfic_bingo G1: wings
Notes: Possibly overly influenced by Addergoole. I may post this as a bonus story at my site at some point.

Adora stretches the wings uncertainly. They feel wet and heavy against her back, lying there lifelessly, but as she finds the muscles that attach to them and flex, they lift away, and seem to gain energy, though they are still heavy. “Are you sure this is the way it’s supposed to be?”

Lal laughs, not unkindly. “No. But I was expecting something like this. You were a caterpillar before. Now you’re a butterfly.”Read more... )
