I am not going to make New Year's Resolutions. But I am going to list some goals. Hopefully I'll check back every month or two, note how I'm going with my goals, why I might be behind or ahead... especially since one of the things I'm always meaning to do, but hardly ever getting around to, is posting about my actual life!
Writing goals:As per
inkingitout, write 500,000 words. My specific goal is to write at least 400k of original fiction, with the last 100k allowed to be fanfic, but I'm giving myself some wiggle room on that. This year I've written 325,000 words of original fiction; I didn't track fanfic, but my AO3 stats say I uploaded 80k of fanfic (though I know I wrote a few thousand words that I haven't uploaded yet), so the 500k goal should be enough of a stretch to challenge myself but not so much to make me stress myself out aiming for it.
Some specific things I plan to write:
- finish my NaNo novel (probably 40k more)
- write at least 10k words of erotica for
orgasm_circlet- complete a bingo in
darkfantasybingo- write a sequel to
Love As It Was Made to Be, focusing on Hemlock as he grows up
- write the second book in the Extranormal Crimes series
- and it feels a little silly to add this as a goal, but it will comprise a significant part of my 2013 wordcount: continue updating Chatoyant College, twice a week, every week
And other writing-related things that might not involve new words:
- finish the edits on the first Extranormal Crimes book so I can send it out to betas
- make edits to a couple of short stories to send to editors
- make edits to a few Kink Bingo fills so I can post them
Reading goals:I really want to decrease the number of paper books I have taking up space in my room. To that end, I've labeled my TBR (on Goodreads) either "to read ebook" or "to read paper." The paper list is currently at 64. I'd like to cut that in half--so my goal is, by the end of the year, to have my "to read paper" list at 32 books or less.
That doesn't necessarily mean I have to read 32 books from that list. I can take some books off if I decide I'm never going to read them, which would happen if I have multiple books in a series and dislike the first one. I don't think that's likely, but it has happened before. However, this also means that if I buy (or receive) any paper books in 2013, I have to read them, or an equivalent number from my list, to keep the numbers down.
I'd actually love to get the paper TBR under 10--but I'm going to aim for 32 and see how I manage with that. If only I weren't such a library addict, it might be easier...
My other reading goal is to read 100 books total (counting books I start but do not finish); this is a pretty loose goal, and one I doubt I'll work hard to achieve, but it's something nice to aim for. I only got to 93 this year, but in 2013 I will hopefully not be forcing myself to finish any long books that I dislike for silly reasons (I did that twice in 2012).
...huh. Goodreads says I read 96 books this year. Looks like there are a couple of DNFs that I failed to add to my text list. Oh well.
Other goals:In 2012 I got into a really good habit of going to the gym to work out--cardio and strength training--three times a week. I'm in much better shape than I was in before (though I still don't eat as well as I could, so probably not the best shape of my life) and it's pretty cool to actually have muscles. However, these last couple of weeks I've been smacked down with a cold, and I haven't been to the gym at all. So that habit is something I need to get back to. I don't think it will be too much of a problem--I really miss it!
Happy New Year, everyone!
