Goodreads says I read 100 books in 2016, and I'm not sure where the discrepancy comes from. I may not have listed all my Harry Potter rereads on my text list.

93. The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula K. Le Guin - *****
94. Abominable Snowmen: Legend Come to Life by Ivan T. Sanderson - DNF
95. Giant Days, Vol. 3 by John Allison - *****
96. Cold Magic by Kate Elliot - ***

For 2017 reading, I have two goals... or, well, one goal and a game!

Happy new year! When I put my iTunes on shuffle this morning (as I usually do), the first song it played was "Pretty Good Year" by Tori Amos. I'll take that as an auspicious sign... but not an amazing one, since it could have chosen "This Will Be My Year" by Semisonic.

Here are the books I read in December:
63. His by Aubrey Dark - ****
64. Among the Nameless Stars by Diana Peterfreund - *** 1/2
65. The First Star to Fall by Diana Peterfreund - ****
66. By the Sword by Mercedes Lackey (reread) - ****
67. Sinner by Maggie Stiefvater - ****
68. Tithe by Holly Black (reread) - *****
69. Moomin Vol. 1 by Tove Jansson - ***
70. A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens (reread) - *****

Reading Bingo, writing, and 2014 goals )

For 2015, I have made a few goals, but most of them are "do this small thing every day." One is to successfully plan my wedding, which is May 2, so that's going to happen whether or not I work hard enough at it. And one is to do well at my new job! That's why I'm not making any big plans or goals for 2015--I'm going to have a full-time job for the first time, and I don't even know if I'll be able to keep up with my usual habits and plans!

Here's to a wonderful 2015 for all of us!

A post about my goals that I set a year ago, and some new goals for 2014, the exciting year ahead of us!

2013 goals )

2014 goals! )

So there you have it. Happy New Year, everyone, and may 2014 surpass the awesomeness of 2013 by several orders of magnitude!

So I was going to check on my goals at the end of each month and see how I was doing with them. I failed to do that for January, but here's February's post, a little late!

If you want to look at the goals I set for the year, they're here.

Writing: I'm a little behind on my [community profile] inkingitout goal, but not by too much--certainly not so much that I can't catch up fairly easily. The NaNo novel is coming along and I think I'm in the final scene; I did the 10k for [community profile] orgasm_circlet, though I haven't finished the novella; I've started working on [community profile] darkfantasybingo; and I've been updating Chatoyant College every week. I also made myself a production schedule to give myself soft deadlines for finishing projects, and that's been fairly motivating. I've started the edits on Strange Abduction as well, though I'm way behind where I'd like to be.

Also, random funny/odd thing: I was looking through my notebook for something else, and found where I'd written down the original idea for what has become Strange Abduction. I'd written the main character's name "Taylor Veets." It really puzzled me for a moment, looking so strange, since shortly after writing that down I did enough research to discover that while "Viets" is a real surname, "Veets" is not, so I went with the first one. It looked weird to me at first, but obviously I've gotten used to it.

Reading: I'm behind on those goals, but again, not insurmountably. I would be in trouble if I was insurmountably behind in only March!

Other: I'm back to the gym, three times a week. Sometimes I have other stuff to do during the week that screws with my schedule, but I'm still going at least three times every week. \o/ I totally have arm muscles now. It's pretty cool.

I am not going to make New Year's Resolutions. But I am going to list some goals. Hopefully I'll check back every month or two, note how I'm going with my goals, why I might be behind or ahead... especially since one of the things I'm always meaning to do, but hardly ever getting around to, is posting about my actual life!

Writing goals:
As per [community profile] inkingitout, write 500,000 words. My specific goal is to write at least 400k of original fiction, with the last 100k allowed to be fanfic, but I'm giving myself some wiggle room on that. This year I've written 325,000 words of original fiction; I didn't track fanfic, but my AO3 stats say I uploaded 80k of fanfic (though I know I wrote a few thousand words that I haven't uploaded yet), so the 500k goal should be enough of a stretch to challenge myself but not so much to make me stress myself out aiming for it.

Some specific things I plan to write:
- finish my NaNo novel (probably 40k more)
- write at least 10k words of erotica for [community profile] orgasm_circlet
- complete a bingo in [community profile] darkfantasybingo
- write a sequel to Love As It Was Made to Be, focusing on Hemlock as he grows up
- write the second book in the Extranormal Crimes series
- and it feels a little silly to add this as a goal, but it will comprise a significant part of my 2013 wordcount: continue updating Chatoyant College, twice a week, every week

And other writing-related things that might not involve new words:
- finish the edits on the first Extranormal Crimes book so I can send it out to betas
- make edits to a couple of short stories to send to editors
- make edits to a few Kink Bingo fills so I can post them

Reading goals:
I really want to decrease the number of paper books I have taking up space in my room. To that end, I've labeled my TBR (on Goodreads) either "to read ebook" or "to read paper." The paper list is currently at 64. I'd like to cut that in half--so my goal is, by the end of the year, to have my "to read paper" list at 32 books or less.

That doesn't necessarily mean I have to read 32 books from that list. I can take some books off if I decide I'm never going to read them, which would happen if I have multiple books in a series and dislike the first one. I don't think that's likely, but it has happened before. However, this also means that if I buy (or receive) any paper books in 2013, I have to read them, or an equivalent number from my list, to keep the numbers down.

I'd actually love to get the paper TBR under 10--but I'm going to aim for 32 and see how I manage with that. If only I weren't such a library addict, it might be easier...

My other reading goal is to read 100 books total (counting books I start but do not finish); this is a pretty loose goal, and one I doubt I'll work hard to achieve, but it's something nice to aim for. I only got to 93 this year, but in 2013 I will hopefully not be forcing myself to finish any long books that I dislike for silly reasons (I did that twice in 2012).

...huh. Goodreads says I read 96 books this year. Looks like there are a couple of DNFs that I failed to add to my text list. Oh well.

Other goals:
In 2012 I got into a really good habit of going to the gym to work out--cardio and strength training--three times a week. I'm in much better shape than I was in before (though I still don't eat as well as I could, so probably not the best shape of my life) and it's pretty cool to actually have muscles. However, these last couple of weeks I've been smacked down with a cold, and I haven't been to the gym at all. So that habit is something I need to get back to. I don't think it will be too much of a problem--I really miss it!

Happy New Year, everyone!
