Please help fund surgery for a very sick kitty.

ETA: The surgery has been funded! Thanks to everyone who helped!

[personal profile] d_generate_girl is looking for a place to live in New York. As she writes, I have known her since she was 13 and can attest that she is an awesome person and unlikely to do murders. So if you know of an apartment available in Manhattan or Queens, let her know.

[personal profile] aldersprig is doing a Giraffe Call on the theme of Animalia! She writes awesome fiction so you should prompt her and get an awesome story.
clare_dragonfly: woman with green feathery wings, text: stories last longer: but only by becoming only stories (Witchy: moon worship)
[personal profile] ysabetwordsmith has now posted Of the Line of Danu, a poem in the Ursulan Cycle. This one is about Morgause, her son Morgan, and his daughter with Ursula, Morwenna.
clare_dragonfly: woman with green feathery wings, text: stories last longer: but only by becoming only stories (HP: Neville: proud parents)
[personal profile] aldersprig is taking prompts to go with a bingo card. And this one.

[personal profile] dancingthroughstars is doing Tarot readings to help pay for needed surgery. I had a great and really helpful reading!

[profile] cat_rood is taking commissions for knitted stuff.
clare_dragonfly: woman with green feathery wings, text: stories last longer: but only by becoming only stories (HP: Neville: proud parents)
[personal profile] lynnoconnacht's fiction and poetry collection, Feather by Feather, is out now! Lynn is an awesome writer and you should read her stories. There are also some neat extras.

[personal profile] ariestess is doing a one card draw for November. One card is free, but she is trying to raise money for some family necessities.

[personal profile] aldersprig had a small emergency and is offering microfic commissions. Lyn is also an awesome writer and you should read her stories.

Disabled Poet Seeks Healthy Macbook

A very dear friend of mine needs money for medical expenses. You can read the full story at the YouCaring page, but the basics are that she has a rare and extremely painful illness. I've seen the progression of this disease on her body and it's awful. It can cause her pain just to be touched. There's an unusual medical procedure that can put her illness into remission, but her insurance won't cover it. She's had it done before and it was a complete and miraculous success for several years, until a different medical procedure was botched and caused the illness to come back. So far she's raised a decent amount of money, but not nearly enough for the procedure. Please, if you can't give, spread the word--every little bit helps!

And on a different note, [personal profile] becka_sutton recently posted about Patreon. I am really intrigued by its setup and keep coming back to it. Basically, people sign up to donate a certain amount for each piece that's released--it seems to be mostly video creators and musicians, so people are paying per video or per song. (I did do a search and found some people doing written fiction, but they don't seem to be having success yet.)

I'm considering how I might make this work for me as a crowdfunding model. One of the main reasons I stopped doing Gardens of Prose was that I don't like taking a chunk of time out of my usual novel-writing schedule to write a bunch of short stories, much as I enjoy writing to prompts otherwise. (Actually, that might be the entire reason.) But I do enjoy writing a short story from time to time--or, like I did earlier this month, tossing out a bunch of them when I find myself unexpectedly between longer projects.

So I was thinking about setting up a Patreon project for my short fiction--like I said to Becka, it seems like the sort of thing that makes more sense with a somewhat irregular schedule, rather than a serial novel like Chatoyant College with predictable updates. I would post most stories to my journal like usual, and would accept requests from patrons and offer patron-only stories (as well as other benefits). Anyone else have any thoughts on this? Would you sign up to give me a dollar per short story?

I would also be interested to see other people trying this out!
clare_dragonfly: A bunny with fluffy fur. He is smirking. (Fiver)
[personal profile] itsamellama is having another Icon Day! Free sketched icons, plus additions for tips! Look at that adorable icon of my bunny Fiver. Look how freaking cute it is.

[personal profile] aldersprig is doing an A-to-Z prompt call and so is [personal profile] sharpeningthebones. They are both wonderful writers whose stories I adore. Go give them prompts! I'm considering asking for letter prompts myself...
clare_dragonfly: woman with green feathery wings, text: stories last longer: but only by becoming only stories (CM: Hotch: fizzing with glee)
[personal profile] sharpeningthebones is having a prompt call! Every prompter gets a teaser of a few sentences to their prompt, and donation can get you more. I really love Charley's stories so you should check out the prompt call!

Two of my always-Kickstart creators are having Kickstarters at the same time:
MeiLin Miranda, author of An Intimate History of the Greater Kingdom, is Kickstarting The Machine God, her book in a shared world series called The Drifting Isle Chronicles. If you like steampunk or just awesome writing, check it out!

Unwoman is Kickstarting her next album of cello covers. I am drooling. I'm already obsessed with her music, but if you like cellos, check it out!

[livejournal.com profile] bigbang_mixup is starting up again! In this big bang, mixers create playlists first, and then authors create stories based on those (and artists create art based on the stories)! I did this last year, and while I wasn't a hundred percent happy with the story I ended up with, I had a lot of fun writing based on a playlist. Signups for mixers, authors, and artists open tomorrow!

[personal profile] aldersprig is doing amazing things. I don't even know what to link to. But if you like fantasy and/or SF and/or erotica, you should read her stories. Go read them!

The Three Jaguars is now a webcomic! It's starting a little slow, but I'm looking forward to seeing where it will go. If you're not already familiar with the Three Jaguars, M. C. A. Hogarth wrote a series of essays on business and marketing for artists of all kinds--because the jaguars are Marketer, Business Manager, and Artist, all contained within on person. It's great advice and webcomics are awesome.

Goodness, it's been ages since I did a post of links. There are a ton of tabs open in my signal boost group. I deeply apologize to anyone who posted something that I missed out on linking because it's not relevant anymore!

The Sounds in Tall Grass by [personal profile] twistedchick, a sequel to Ray Bradbury's short story "The Veldt." There are some other cool stories in [community profile] october_country too.

Criminal Minds fanfic: Alternatives by [personal profile] ariestess. I betaed this and I really enjoyed it. You will too! I hope. :D It's also a crossover with a bunch of stuff, but it will stand alone if you're only familiar with CM (I know, because I am only peripherally familiar with some of the other fandoms--no, I've never actually watched an entire episode of the X-Files).

Here is a really awesome song. Listen to it if you like creepy things.

[personal profile] kayim is looking for an artist to work with.

The awesome steampunk webcomic Next Town Over is having a Kickstarter for its first book.

And [personal profile] wrenstarling is having a one card draw!

Unwoman, quite probably my single favorite musician, is doing a Kickstarter for her new album. You can get a digital download of it for as little as $1. There's an audio teaser on the page--give it a listen!

[profile] cat_rood has written about bullying and cyberstalking. This is something that should be spread around.

[personal profile] aldersprig is doing her June Mini-Giraffe Call! Go and give her prompts about her awesome world of Reiassan--it's a fantasy world with magic and riding goats, and there have been stories set in a medieval and a steampunk era, plus a rich history.

If I owe you a comment on something, I apologize. I seem to be even more behind than usual due to an influx of posts--[community profile] casestory, [community profile] bigbang_mixup, [community profile] kink_bingo ramp-up, and [community profile] junetide are all posting at once! If you've posted fiction in the last few weeks and I haven't commented on it, it's probably open in a tab, and I will get to it. (So many tabs.) However, if there's anything in particular you want feedback on soon, feel free to give me a poke--I don't mind rearranging my reading priorities.

♥ to you all!

[personal profile] aldersprig's Giraffe Call is open! Go prompt her about Origins and Creation!

I was thinking about doing a Garden of Prose this weekend, but my time is being devoured by cats. Also, it's Mother's Day tomorrow. So, maybe next week. Or maybe some other time. I dunno.

Some of these are quite old, I'm afraid! I believe they're all still applicable, though.

[personal profile] elialshadowpine wrote a post about Women in Urban Fantasy and the Mistreatment Thereof.

[personal profile] whatawaytoburn is taking prompts!

[personal profile] analect wrote about the screwed up British disability support system. There's a petition you can sign if you're a UK citizen.

Stories Are Genderless, so guess what? Boys can read stories about girls too! Wow!

Links to all the 2012 short story Hugo nominees. Some are online and some are PDFs.

[personal profile] aldersprig wrote No Parades, a cool science fiction short story. (Actually, I'm not sure whether it's science fiction or fantasy or what, but the use of redacted felt more SF to me.)

[personal profile] jessicasteiner is holding a cover art contest for The Sleeping Death. There are monetary prizes and promotion opportunities.

[personal profile] pathological_needlepoint wrote Beyond Price, an awesome stealth sonnet, and is now taking prompts.

Holy crap, I have actually posted three times today, and my reading list is full of stuff today. I'd say there's something in the water, but I'm pretty sure that something is 3W4DW. Speaking of which, hi, new friends! ::waves:: I don't normally post this much, but the posts from the past couple of days are probably a good indication of what I usually post...
clare_dragonfly: pink dragonfly in green frame, text: Clare (!Clare-Dragonfly)
After several years of resistance, I have finally joined deviantArt, mostly because I've heard people find cover art for indie published books there. I have already found some awesome cover artists and I don't have anything ready to publish yet XD I'd also forgotten that people post writing there; it still seems like a terrible medium for posting fiction, but maybe I'll put up a few short pieces. However, it's also rekindling my love of drawing, and since I keep coming upon interesting tutorials, I've started drawing more again. I doubt I'll ever draw as much as I write, but maybe someday I will actually do that webcomic I've been dreaming of.

Anyway, here's me. If you're on DA we should be friends!

I haven't done a Garden of Prose for a while, because I've been so busy, but I'm planning to do one next month. Probably the 13th. It's not very lucrative, but it is fun, and I want to write more short stories to send out for sale!

--

[livejournal.com profile] djinni is doing another Free Icon Day. I haven't made my request yet, but I think I'm going to tip, and request icons of two Extranormal Crimes characters: Maggie and Kaede. Hmm, I have a clear idea of what I want the Kaede (as a fox) one to look like, so I guess I'll request that one first. I'm not sure about the Maggie one. I feel like she should be doing something, or holding something... holding up her badge, maybe? Any thoughts?

There's another writers friending meme for Three Weeks for Dreamwidth. I haven't commented yet, but I will...

[personal profile] limiinal is taking prompts for flash fiction on the theme of masks, memory, and magic, and has written Scramble to my prompt!

Scheherezade's Facade: Fantastical Tales of Gender Bending, Cross-Dressing, and Transformation is a Kickstarter campaign for a fantasy anthology. All the stories are there, but they need funds for publication. One of the authors included, Aliette de Bodard, is among my favorite short story writers ever.

[personal profile] ariestess's free monthly one card draw is open!

The Torn World March Muse Fusion is open! If you leave a prompt there, I might end up writing to it!
clare_dragonfly: woman with green feathery wings, text: stories last longer: but only by becoming only stories (IHGK: Teacher: not amused)
Perhaps less necessary now that Paypal has backed off their policy of quasi-censorship, but still interesting: [personal profile] elf is compiling a list of fiction containing underage sex, rape, incest, and bestiality themes. Some of them are quite well known but not what you'd expect--at least not what I expected!

50 Reasons to Have Sex multifandom fic fest

Aliette de Bodard writes about Sherlock and women. I found this interesting because, while I don't watch Sherlock, I've heard its lack of female characters defended as being true to the original stories. That didn't match up with my memory of the original stories.

And last but definitely not least, [community profile] junetide signups are open! This is its second year, and last year was lots of fun. It's basically an original fiction gift exchange, along the lines of Yuletide, but set up to coincide with the winter solstice in the southern hemisphere. And, you know, original fiction.
clare_dragonfly: A red rose laying on an open book, text: read a book (Reading: read a book)
Here is a fun story about unicorns.

I may have posted about this before, but Plunge Magazine is having a Kickstarter to, well, start up the magazine--it will be a place for genre stories about queer women. With only five days left, it's having trouble meeting its goal. The magazine will exist even if it doesn't make its goal, but I'd like it to not struggle in its first year!

[livejournal.com profile] stonetalker is having a leap day two-card Tarot draw, using two different decks.

Here's an interesting article about clicks in African click languages and the ways speakers of different languages process sounds. It goes into the use of tones in Mandarin Chinese, as well. Plus there's a video with a beautiful "Click Song."

[personal profile] haikujaguar is crowdfunding the first novel of Spots the Space Marine on Kickstarter.

[personal profile] anke is doing a fiction fishbowl with the theme of Law and Order.

Coming up this weekend will be [personal profile] aldersprig's Giraffe Call, with a theme of wine and roses; [community profile] crowdfunding's Crowdfunding Creative Jam, with a theme of alternative sexualities/QUILTBAG; and my own Garden of Prose, with a theme of fountains, statues, & gazing balls.
