whatawaytoburn interviewed me!
What is your favorite musical? Have you seen it live? (Shush, I can totally do two part questions)
Hmm, that is a really tough question, but in the end I'm going to have to pick Into the Woods. Fairy tales! And fun music! And creepy things! It is the only musical to which I own an official copy of the script, though I didn't buy that myself. And yes, I've seen it live, if you count amateur theater; quite a few times, if you count the ones for which I was running spotlight... my hand still twitches when "Giants in the Sky" comes on. (The song before it is an ensemble number, and with only one spotlight, there's no point in using it, but we wanted to spot Jack, and there's no space between the two songs.)
Do you find writing novels or short stories easier?
Well, "easier" is kind of a weird distinction, because short stories are so much shorter than novels. But I do think I'm more successful generally with novels. You can shove more stuff into novels.
What s your writing area like?
::looks around:: Um... a mess. With space for a laptop. Usually. On the right: pens, cell phone, nasal spray, water, hiragana flashcards, little notepad, mouse. On the left: pile of books, random massive pile of papers + magazines + knitting projects + electronics... etc. Sometimes I write at the kitchen table, which is less messy, or in the living room on the La-Z-Boy, which is even less messy.
What sort of tools (word processors, pen and paper, other note taking devices, coffee...) do you use when you write?
I usually write on the computer, though when I get ideas in the night after I've turned my computer off I will scribble things down in a notebook. And of course I always have a notebook with me. My main, and favorite, writing program is Scrivener. Ahh... Scrivener. I could go on about it, but I mainly love the way it lets you divide what you're working on into several scenes, and mark their status (to do, incomplete, done, etc.), and give them little colors, and move things around... it's just really useful for me.
Are there any stories you want to write but don't think you're ready to write yet?
Yes, there's quite a few, but the main one is Queen of the Wasteland. I've written quite a few smaller pieces in that world, but I really feel I need to do more research on PTSD before starting the main story (since Taia's PTSD is a major part of the plot). Thankfully I've finally got the book I wanted to read, so I'm further along on that score! I also need to create more of the language, for naming purposes.
And, because I can. Do you do NaNoWriMo?

Yes, that's my answer. I have no "participant" badges because I have never participated without winning ;)

Date: 2011-09-20 02:28 am (UTC)The people. I know I complained about my host family and my co-teachers, but I did love getting to know them. My students - the ones who wanted to learn - were some of the best I've taught, smart and creative and funny. It's also still one of the only places in the world I'd trust total strangers to kidnap me and bring me back.
2) What is your favorite musical?
A lot, but when it really comes down to it, Into the Woods. It's such a great story, with brilliant songs and a wide range of characters.
3) If it was the apocalypse and you only had time to grab what you could carry, what would you grab?
My computer, but also, it would depend on the apocalypse. If it were zombies, I'd grab a bunch of lighters and gasoline. If it were aliens, I'd grab Star Trek DVDs. If it were a plague, I'd grab all the antibiotics I could find.
4) What's your favorite type of candy?
Dark chocolate.
5) Do you regularly read any webcomics? If so, which?
Webcomics aren't my thing. I read fic.
