smeddley's: The storm's path
Notes: Hey, look! I wrote a Wasteland story with an actual sorceress in it! Considering how important a part magic is to my conception of this world, I haven't done much with it.
This got a lot creepier than I expected as I continued it...
The trees were whipping around them. The wind was coming faster and faster. Piri knew she had to get her family—her friends, but her family of choice—to safety. But which way? Where was safety? She wanted to climb a tree, but it wasn’t safe. The children were all crying. Her friends were trying to calm them down, but not having much luck.
With an inward sigh, she turned to look at the oldest, Kul. She bent down and looked into his eyes, knowing that her double pupils—strange and new and with a meaning he didn’t entirely understand—would unnerve him. Usually she tried to avoid that, but today it served her purposes. Soon enough, he stopped whimpering and blinked the tears out of his eyes. “Listen to me,” she said urgently, trying to speak over the noise of the storm without shouting. “I want you to help your mom, and Asa, calm down the little ones. Can you do that? I need to think.”
“Okay,” he said, quietly, and she stood up to look away from them. She started out facing into the wind, but within seconds it was changing directions again, first blowing at the side of her face, then whipping her hair about in tangles. Gradually, the noises began to die down.
She closed her eyes and extended her senses. They were new, and she hadn’t had much practice, but if she was going to learn about them, it was now or never. Yes… there was the storm. It was a huge presence, just in front of her and to her left, but she knew the center of it was a little further away than that. Then something crackled and her internal senses went out in a blaze of white.
“What was that?” she cried, opening her eyes.
