I read a lot of books this month! Well... I read a lot if you count all the Harry Potter books as separate books. They do go a lot faster than other books. But I'm glad I read them, because I'd been meaning to for a while and they made me happy.

State of the TBR: 199

Hey, it actually didn't go up! Which is impressive because I received three books for my birthday. I only added one to my TBR, though, as one is a gorgeous old collection of Andersen's fairy tales and I'm pretty sure I've already read all the stories (plus I couldn't actually find it in Goodreads), and the other one is some sort of collection of poetry and quotations (and also not in Goodreads, apparently).

Also, hey, it's my birthday! Whee :D

Title: A Courting Gift
Word count: 100
Rating: G
Prompt: [community profile] rainbowfic: Tyrian Purple 4, golden apple; Heart Gold 14, Love consists in desiring to give what is our own to another and feeling his delight as our own. - Emanuel Swedenborg
Notes: Doing some backstory work for this year's Nano. Apparently, this is how the main character's parents first started courting. Also, apparently it's a closer earth-analogue than I was planning, if they have the same classical mythology!

To the fairest.

Kate stared at the apple as she pulled off her muffler. That was all: an apple, and three words. No card, no other note.

“Lottie?” she called. The maid appeared almost instantly. “Who brought this?”

Lottie shook her head. “I know him not, mistress. He not leave a name. He only bring apple and say it for you.”

Of course it was for her. There was no other woman in the household, after all. And certainly no other who would have recognized the classical reference.

To the fairest.

Kate picked up the apple and began to laugh.
