Notes: Possibly the book I'm reading is overly influencing my mind in this story.
They stepped up into a world she didn’t understand. She knew from her experience that she would never be able to understand it, and she must find something to focus on, quickly, that would anchor her mind and keep her from going mad in the chaotic press of images, sounds, and sensations. She chose, as always, her teacher, who had appeared beside her. She was the only real and solid thing in this unconscious world.
Her teacher smiled, briefly, then pointed ahead. The student turned reluctantly to see what was being pointed at. The rest of the world still swirled chaotically around them, but there, something had coalesced—or almost coalesced. She stared at it, frowning. It was as though a wall or fence stretched across the horizon before them—but a wall made entirely of turning, shifting wheels.
“What is it?” she asked in the voice without sound.
“It is the fence of wheels,” replied the teacher. “Everyone sees it differently. I will not ask how you see it unless you wish to tell me. But this is what all our training has led to. This is the time for you to make your choice.”
She looked slowly back and forth across the seemingly endless row of wheels, which turned and spun, shining with millions of different colors. “How will I choose?”
“You must go through the gate, and touch the wheel of your choice.”
“But how do I know what I am choosing?”
The teacher shook her head. “You must discover that for yourself.”
“I see no gate.”
“You will see it, when you are there.” The teacher put a hand in the small of her back and pushed.
She stumbled forward on the nothing they stood on, then turned, eyes wide with fear. “You will not guide me?”
