Clare's Garden of Prose
Jan. 15th, 2012 12:03 amWelcome to Clare's Garden of Prose! If you're new to my fiction and would like to read some before prompting, everything posted on my DW is listed here. Results from previous Gardens are also available: herbs and fences & gates.
What is Clare's Garden of Prose? Glad you asked. It's a crowdfunded call for prompts, in which I write short fiction based on prompts offered here in comments. It's free to prompt, but in exchange for donations and promotions, I offer additional perks, including more posted fiction.
For each prompt I select, I will write and post at least 300 words; since I can never predict how a prompt will catch my imagination, those 300 words could range from being a complete flash fiction piece to being the beginning of a novelette. If the piece does not end up posted in its entirety, it will be available for sponsorship even after the call for prompts is over. I may keep some pieces from eligibility for sponsorship if I think they may be appropriate for traditional publication.
Feel free to leave as many prompts as you would like. I will guarantee a response to one prompt per commenter. Whether or not I do more depends on how the prompts catch my imagination as well as the total number of commenters.
You can also get more words guaranteed to your prompt. There are two ways to do this: donations and promotion. For every dollar you donate, I will write and post a further 100 words. For every link you post letting other people know about this call for prompts, whether it be at Dreamwidth, LiveJournal, Twitter, or elsewhere, I will write and post a further 50 words. (Links must be posted before the prompting period ends to count.) You may need to let me know in your comment if you promoted!
There are also collective perks for donations. If I raise $25 in donations during this Garden of Prose, everyone who donated or promoted will get a complete copy of their story by email, no matter how long it is. I will also extend the public version of one story by at least 500 words, with a poll so everyone can vote on which to extend. If I raise $50 in donations, everyone who prompted will get a complete copy of their story by email, and a story will be extended by at least 1000 words. Finally, if I raise $100, there will be a second Garden of Prose within the next three weeks, focusing on one of my worlds (chosen by poll).
If 15 or more different people offer prompts on this post, I will write and post an extra story about a previously established character. Commenters will help me choose whom!
For a single donation of $10 or more, you can name a character in your or someone else's prompted story. Everyone who promotes will also be entered into a drawing to name a character. I make no guarantees as to who the character will be, but it's entirely possible your character will be in future stories as well! Naming can get complicated in some of my worlds, but I will work with you to create a name with the sound and/or meaning that you choose. You could end up creating a word in one of my fictional languages!
The theme for this Garden is paths. Use the theme to inspire your prompts, but they can be as closely or tangentially related as you wish! Further, feel free to to specify if you'd like your story to take place in any one of my worlds, or if you'd like to see a specific kind of underrepresented character.
Prompting will be open from 12:01 AM EDT Sunday, January 15 to 11:59 PM EDT Monday, January 16. If you don't have a Dreamwidth account, you can still prompt; anonymous commenting is enabled, or you can post with an OpenID.
Also, another call for prompts is currently active--the Crowdfunding Creative Jam (also on LJ). I may combine prompts from there with Garden of Prose prompts, and feel free to mix and match--combine the themes to inspire your prompts, send me to particular CCJ prompts you're interested in, or just prompt in both places!

Leave a prompt to plant a prosy, and watch my garden grow!

The German equivalent of "being on the wrong track" is "auf dem Holzweg sein". Holz = Timber, Weg = way, path. A Holzweg is a path leading into the woods, but ending or petering out nowhere particular, since it only exists for transporting timber out of the forest.
